Of January.

Thursday, 5 January, 2012

Oh oh oh – I should be writing approximately eight hundred words on the notion of radical homemaking; instead, I find myself tucked up on the sofa with my old friend Procrastination (who has been with us right over Chrimbly, not having anywhere else to go; oddly, he tells me that some people are childish enough to wish him elsewhere at such times, and that not a few of them were quite rude in their manner of telling him so!), tappetty-tap-tapping here, there, and everywhere except that very document which should be commanding my attention. Gosh. Quite like ol’ times, eh? Ah, the happy days of my thesis – what fun that was, and how we laughed.

Ahhh.

January. January. Time of resolution (or lack thereof). Of dark days, and short evening. Of lengthening days, and, if you are us, so far, cars which break down. Lots of times. Twice, with a small baby with bronchiolitis (a horrible closey-uppy breathing-tubesy thing which affects small babies rather nastily) on motorways. And then again, just for the fun of it.

So, tell me nice things which cheer me up. Tell me things which aren’t about asthma, or bronchiolitis, or middle-of-the-night wake-up calls. Go on. Do.

  1. Just number crunched my accounts, and although I’m still not making a living the turnover is far better than I’d hoped….incentive to go for it!!

  2. Grandchild #2 shall be registered for kindergarten next week. We haven’t had a blizzard as of yet. I am managing to keep up with the ‘New Year, New You’ blog challenge. I won a Witchy Tarot deck & I’m fairly certain we shall conversate. It’s only 5 January…too early for much else to happen! Hope the babe heals soonest…& doesn’t share.

  3. There is snow on the ground. I’m less than 24 hours away from leaving it behind and moving, and hopefully getting properly started on my dissertation sooner rather than later. Exciting things, to say the least, which might explain why I’m reading blogs rather than sleeping. … Here’s a nice thing I discovered recently: age doesn’t make me a different person. I’m still me and can stop worrying about being too old for things (young people can mind their own). I suspect this applies to other people as well. (Also: I finally gave up on resolutions. I thought I’d just enjoy life in the new year. We’ll see how that goes.)

By the way, thanks for the bank recommendations some time ago. Co-op it is. As soon as I have an address, that is.

Right. Stop chatting, start packing. I’m no stranger to procrastination.

  4. Radical homemaking? That sounds very, erm, interesting. I can understand the procrastination! Good luck in overcoming it. And hope Smallest is recovered soonest.

  5. Most intrigued by radical homemaking, what does that mean?
Nothing to tell here, except the wind has dropped and I did eventually plant all 10 of my apple trees. Am knitting bootees for a friend’s newborn and gearing up to take the littlest swimming.

  6. I just received a proper handwritten letter from a friend thanking me for my Christmas present. Quite lifted my day.

  7. I loved the Radical Homemakers book, would dearly like to see an English equivalent. We’re in the process of packing up our worldly possessions in readiness for moving them over to the Land Of Leprechauns. Eldest daughters have excelled themselves in their first ever exam, making me smile and be able to say “yay, autonomous home education really works” – having been something of an article of faith all these years. Hoping for good things in this year, may you have them too.

our car broke down finally so awfully we bought a new one (well it’s older than the one that broked) and so far, fingers crossed – it’s the new car bit i’m sharing
i think i might have discovered my ‘passion’
i have come to terms with eldest daughter
mr tom seems to be rid of his latest rendezvous with cancer
i cut my hair really short (no dreads for me just yet)

  9. Here at the other end of the earth it’s sunburn and mozzie bites along with the wistful knowledge that the days are shortening and defiant attempts to make the most of the remaining summer.

Look forward to reading about radical homemaking.

    Happy New Year,

  10. Have spent the past three weeks successfully procrastinating my way around doing revision for my first set of exams in the garden design degree I signed up for in the autumn – they are on THURSDAY! I haven’t sat an exam for 23 years. I’m probably buggered. However, have been thoroughly enjoying the whole art side of the work and have spent blissful hours on visual studies projects, entirely to the detriment of the revision, naturally.
Hope your little one is on the mend now.

  11. Oh, and on the subject of cheering, I found this rather lovely blog recently (in the course of avoiding what I should have been doing) – she’s in your neck of the woods (ish).

Not that I’m suggesting you should spend any time looking at it when you ought to be writing about radical homemakers. Oh no.
