Amanda: thank you - I shall need all the help I can get! :)

gz: the benefit of using one of the major blog hosts, though, is that there is generally lots of advice available, and sometimes stuff developed specifically to help you. What fecked me over in this instance was that I was doing something reasonably obscure in that I didn't use WordPress's in-built comments. Hopefully, if you're sorting something Blogger-wise, it should be a point-and-shoot experience. :)

Megan: the problem is that this template uses three separate CSS files to specify bits and bats, and then there are customisable widgets on offer through WordPress. I can't find the code which relates specifically to the search bar, and the bits which seem to show the widgets don't respond in the way I'd expect to, say, changing something from h3 to h2 - well, in fact, they don't respond at all, which suggests that there is code elsewhere that I'm not finding. Or something. I've tried changing bits in the helpfully-named sidebar.css and in the main index, and in the style.css which governs (supposedly) the entire blog, so far without success. Oh, and also themefunctions.php. *goes cross-eyed*

BW: I thought as much, for most people, though I have used it myself in the past to find a particular entry to link to, or whatever. If I can customise it, I'll keep it, but if not, I'll ditch it, I think. Thanks for the feedback, though.

Provincial Lady: why thank you kindly. :)

Ally: nice to see you about a bit more lately - have been enjoying catching up with your blog, by the way - and thanks for the feedback. At the moment, the search verdict is mostly of the bah-humbug variety, but hey... subject to change!

I use the search sometimes - to look for recipes, usually. Perhaps, you could put a link to google with the advice that Bluewitch has given for searching - that would do it, too.

Sorry, I have no help on code and stuff, although personally I've never used the search box. But I just wanted to say how gorgeous and cosy your little yellow cottage looks in your last post against the snow - what a perfect colour!

If I wanted to do a search I'd do it on Google eg "Earthenwitch" "chocolate cake", so, unless I am in a minority, I suspect it could go.

Okay... your comment box HATES html code apparently and strips it out so these comments make very little sense! (Which is a doh! moment as natch it's not going to display code. Sorry, early in the morning) Let me know if I can help - I'm not a haloscan expert so I don't know how much I can tell you, but I'll try!

Argh! Dunno what happened there! Here's the html again:

Search

Now, the search box is nested in an unordered list () which means it has this style:

#sidebar ul {
	color: #0000;
	list-style-type: none;
	margin: 3px;
	padding: 3px;
}

But again that's not doing much more than setting the text colour and removing any bullets or anything from a list element (the search box isn't in an tag so it wouldn't get a bullet anyway). There's also a bit more spacing applied.

This is probably no more than you already know, but...

This:

Search

More

Is the markup in you actual page that refers to the search form so this:

#sidebar form {
	margin: 0 0 0 10px;
        margin-top: 10px;
	padding-bottom: 2px;
        margin-left: 3px;
        padding-left: 3px;

}
Is targeting the search form. All it's doing is giving it some spacing - what are you trying to make it do?

I need to learn how to print out my posts and comments before I lose them - I still feel safer with paper and print!!
